Thurrock Harriers Athletics Club Membership Policy

This policy runs jointly with the Club Admissions Policy 

Membership of the Club is open to all persons 8 years and over without discrimination and may only be refused where admission to membership would be contrary to the best interests of the sport or the good conduct and interests of the Club. 

Membership of the Club shall be made up of President, Vice Presidents, Life Members, Ordinary Members - First and Second claim, Honorary Members, Associate Members and Under 11s.

Each applicant must complete the official application form. 

Applications from children under 18 years old must be approved by a parent. 

The club shall have different categories of Membership which reflect different situations and age groups.

First Claim Membership This category is for active athletes. They can take a full part in Club activities and have the right to vote at AGMs providing they are 16 or over. Fees will include UKA membership fee. 

Second Claim Members

Can take a full part in Club activities and have the right to vote at AGMs providing they are 16 or over. This is available to athletes registered with another club and have requested to train at and/or compete for the Club at a different level of League and is at the discretion of the Committee. 

Under 13 Members 

Children age eight and under 11 will be a separate category of membership and will have a separate form. They will train once per week. Their fee will not include UKA membership They will only become full members when they can be placed with one of the main Club coaches and then will pay the full Junior fee with the UKA fee, enabling them to compete as Under 13’s in all competitions.   

Honorary Members  

Committee Members are expected to be Honorary (free) members once a Club Honorary Membership form has been completed (unless they are already Active Members or Life Members) and can vote at all Committee Meetings and AGMs. Club Coaches are expected to be Honorary (free) members once a Club membership form has been completed (unless they are already Life Members) and can vote at AGMs.

Associate Members 

Are not eligible to participate in Club Competitions and activities, are excluded from membership of the Committee and have no power at AGMs. 

Life Members This is an honour awarded by the Club for meritorious service to the Club, or in the case of active athletes, as a consequence of being awarded a Senior International Vest, including England, provided they have served 2 years club membership. This honour is also awarded to a member who has 25 years continuous membership of Thurrock Harriers. 

The announcement of this award will be made at the AGM. 

The Committee shall have full power to reject an application for membership, suspend any member for a given period and to remove the name of any member from the membership register. 

Any member found guilty of misconduct, which in the opinion of the committee is not in the true spirit of the sport or is in breach of conduct prejudicial to the good name of the Club, shall be dealt with as the committee decides. Any member, who wishes to protest against a permanent or temporary suspension of the Club taken by the Committee, has the right to appeal as per the Grievance and Disciplinary Policy. 

Cessation of Membership 

Membership shall terminate if: 

  • the member dies.
  • is convicted of a criminal offence which involves dishonesty or any other offence relating to safeguarding, drugs or violence, or any offence relating to children.
  • the member resigns by written notice to the Club.
  • the Member is in arrears to the Club and his or her subscriptions are at least three months overdue.
  • The Member is removed by a resolution of the Committee as a result of the Club’s Disciplinary Policy.

Any person ceasing to be a member forfeits all rights in relation to claims upon the Club, its property and funds and the return of any subscription fee.
