Welcome to our first Newsletter!

We trust you are all well and excited to be coming back to the track. We aim to send newsletters out periodically to keep you updated on club news; including results from recent competitions, future events, and some of the things that go on behind the scenes to make sure the club runs.  We would like to hear your feedback on what you may like to see included too. It’s been a challenging year for all of us; Covid has impacted on all areas of our lives.  Rest assured that as restrictions are being lifted the club are continually risk assessing for all our safety – this may still seem restrictive to some but we ask that everyone adheres to our rules.

Meetings/events

District Sports Cancelled – as there is no district competition this year schools will need to enter athletes directly to Essex Schools.   If you think you are of the required standard then please check with your school.

Essex Multi Event and relay Championships - These have been cancelled this year due to the late start to the season.

Essex 5000m track championship - This is planned for the 7th July at Chelmsford. There may be a 10000m championship later in the season.

Behind the scenes/Points from committee meetings

Membership - Membership currently stands at approx. 30 less members compared to last year, the main reason for this shortfall is believed to be Covid, and senior endurance athletes.
Although we do not have the capacity to take on more Junior Multi Event athletes, as we are limited by our number of coaches, we do have limited space for over 18 endurance athletes.

Stadium Maintenance - Stadium Floodlights; our stadium floodlights are obsolete and are increasingly difficult to repair. Work is currently underway to find the best option to replace with modern, high efficient lighting.   We have also been looking for funding over the last few months.

Track Hire – As you are aware hiring the track is a much-needed revenue for the club.   Although track hire is significantly down on previous years due to covid some opportunities have appeared. The new school, Orsett Heath Academy is looking to hire the track during the summer term.   Also, the Football Association has enquired to hire the track for referee fitness tests.

Jack Petchey AwardsWe plan to make a Leader Award and four Athlete Awards this year. Details of how to vote will be issued over the coming months.

Volunteers Our club is run by volunteers and we are always looking for more; if you are interested then please let us know.  We are particularly interested in anyone who may have considered training to be a coach or an official and ask that they please contact anyone in the committee.

Under 11’s  - As the Covid situation improves we are planning to bring the multi-event U11’s back to training starting from the 20th May.

Club Standards  -  England Athletics are launching a new process to ensure that clubs are operated in a safe and responsible way which they are calling ‘Club Standards’. The ‘Club Standards’ cover the area of Governance and Duty of Care. We plan to involve EA in implementing these standards at THAC.

Track Clean Up- A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped clean up the track, on the 17th April, ready for the track season. Sand pits were all raked and tidied up, throwing circle’s jet washed, shot put quadrants weeded, announcers box cleaned, stand swept, and the outside of the clubhouse cleaned.
